TrainingHer:
How to write for impact
Journalism training: How to write for impact
As part of our commitment to promote women’s voices, we partnered with Nadja to launch ‘How to write for impact’, our very first mentorship program.
We both believe women play an active role in shaping the world and deserve to have their voices heard. We know that women are still underrepresented in the media (only 25% of news stories worldwide are about women), and we created this training program to provide trainees with the tools and the encouragement to use writing to share their ideas and perspectives.
The program covered finding your writing voice, journalistic principles such as objectivity and inclusive language, how to structure different types of articles, interviewing techniques, and editing for clarity and impact, all over the course of 12 weeks.
Why did we do this ?
We know that it is increasingly hard for young people to start careers in journalism due to budget cuts, the consolidation of many media companies leading to fewer opportunities, and a high level of competition that unfortunately can result in favoring quick, sensationalist content over in-depth reporting.
We had several key goals with this project: to equip our mentees with the tools to write stories that have an impact; to provide a platform for them to share their ideas and concerns; and to provide them with the confidence that writers so often need at the beginning of their careers so they know the value of their ideas and feel comfortable pitching to commissioning editors.
This is an internal mentorship program for members of Politics4Her.

This is one of the most impactful program that I have ever been part of. I learned the art of writing and i am now confident that i can clearly articulate issues in form of writing. The trainers really gave their all with expertise! This enabled me to understand the whole process of writing and articulating issues especially injustices in our society, and ultimately call to action. I highly recommend the program to aspiring writers. Thank you Nadja Media and Politics4Her for the opportunity!

The program and mentorship were excellent. Both Politics4Her and the Nadja team did an amazing job ensuring that the program ran smoothly and that all the trainees understood the content very well. Before the program, I was intimidated to write an article because my area of studies is so far from journalism. But now, I have confidence in writing and pitching my ideas for future publications.

The program has been a truly useful experience. Well-paced, beginner-friendly, and with fascinatingly supportive mentors. The program gave me an understanding on how to start writing, what to pay attention to and how to structure the article to make it clear and informative. The program made me less afraid of getting started, reaching out to people I would want to interview, as well as truly inspired to create and express myself. Thank you to Alia and Leila for such an informative course and extensive feedback on our written pieces.

Dear Nadja Media and Politics4Her team, I can’t thank you enough for creating a space where learning is both profound and enjoyable in this TrainingHer program. The skills and insights I gained in writing impactful pieces and viewing journalism through such a beautiful and inspiring lens have been truly transformative. The biggest advice I can give to future mentees is to be mindful of all the teaching that the amazing mentors give us through this journey, as each one is incredibly useful.
