Jacob Zuma announced his resignation with immediate effect on Wednesday night, rather than being pushed to the exit by a motion of censure from the ANC. Jacob Zuma had been at the heart of polemics and scandals of corruption since months. Only fifteen hours after this resignation, the leader of the African National Congress (ANC, ruling party), Cyril Ramaphosa, was elected new President of the Republic of South Africa by MPs. In the absence of another candidate against Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of the Constitutional Court, Mogoeng Mogoeng, declared him President of the Republic without even voting.
